چکیده

Otoliths are small stone located in fish inner ears and characterised by an accretionnary growth. They act as a biological archive and are of much use in marine biology and ecology. In this article a computer vision framework is presented which recover the successive shapes of the otolith and the significant ridges and valleys from a 2D grayscale image. Seeing vision processes as complex systems, an iterated process is presented using two perceptual information to drive a variational algorithm which considers the successive concentric shapes of the otoliths as level-sets of a dome shaped potential function. Potential applications includes in particular fish age estimation, otoliths morphogenesis modelling, otolith proxy fusion.

Robust time-frequency model estimation in otolith images for fish age and growth analysis

We present a robust method for time-frequency model estimation. It involves a robust Leclerc’s estimator to ensure robustness w.r.t. noise and interferences present in timefrequency representations. This scheme is applied to fish age and growth analysis from otolith images. This application involves the estimation of the parameters of a priori fish growth models using this robust time-frequency...

Evaluation of otolith shape variability in hatchery-reared brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), Black Sea trout (Salmo trutta labrax) and their hybrid

In aquaculture, the process of hybridization is used to produce animals that have better growth rates, meat quality, and higher resistance and tolerance to environmental variations than their parental species. The identification of a hybrid fish may require a DNA-based technology that is an expensive process. In this study, the sagittal otolith shape of hatchery-reared brook trout (Salvelinus f...

Computer Vision and Otolith: toward a Modelisation of the Morphogenesis of Accretionary Processes

Otolith are small stone growing according to an accretionary process located in fishes inner ears from which a lot can be learnt about their biology and ecology. Computer vision is one of the mean of systematic analysis of those stone. This paper describe an approach using partial differential equation and variational methods to reconstruct the morphogenesis of an otolith from an image. Résumé....

Sagitta shape analysis, a tool for possible detection of Grammoplites suppositus (Troschel, 1840) population in Persian Gulf

The study was performed on the shape and morphology of otolith Grammoplites suppositus (Troschel, 1840) in Bushehr and Hormozgan waters of the Persian Gulf. 157 specimens (86 from Hormozgan and 72 from Bushehr) were collected as trawl bycatch. All the specimens are killed and fixed in 70% alcohol. After obtaining otolith, its shape indices include: form factor, roundness, circularity, rectangul...

Reconstructing individual shape histories of fish otoliths: A new image-based tool for otolith growth analysis and modeling

In this paper is presented a novel image processing tool for the extraction of geometric information in otolith images. It relies on the reconstruction of individual otolith shape histories from otolith images. Based on the proposed non-parametric level-set representation of otolith shape history, applications to the extraction of growth axes and ring structures in otolith images are first cons...
